BOP / Business Owner's Policy
Understand property and general liability inside the package.
A BOP packages business property and general liability for qualifying operations. The name alone does not establish eligibility or everything included.
The basic BOP structure
A single policy may address business buildings, contents, or stock together with general liability for third-party bodily injury or property damage. Optional coverage may be considered, but a BOP does not automatically contain every business risk.
What affects eligibility and structure
- Business type, size, employees, and work performed
- Owned or leased locations, buildings, contents, equipment, and stock
- Work at customer sites, products, vehicles, and professional services
- Client and lease insurance requirements and any needed endorsements
Terms to understand
- Business Property
- Buildings, contents, equipment, or stock, reviewed by property, location, and valuation terms.
- General Liability
- General third-party bodily injury and property damage liability, distinct from professional errors.
- Business Income
- Coverage involving income and continuing expense after covered property damage interrupts operations, subject to time and limit terms.
- Eligibility
- Carrier rules for business type, size, and operations. Not every business qualifies.
What still needs review in a package
Business interruption, property off premises, customer property, products, cyber, professional services, vehicles, or workers' compensation may need different terms or policies.
Locations, actual operations, and lease or client requirements should match the application and policy wording.
When a review may be useful
- When leasing or buying a new location
- When stock, equipment, revenue, or operations change
- When a contract or COI requirement is added
- Before renewal, to revisit business-income assumptions
